When this client came to PondWorks with a vision, a stunning pond that would greet every visitor the moment they turned onto the property, we knew we had something special on our hands. What’s even more exciting? This was our third water feature installation at this property, joining a garden pond in the driveway turnaround and a stormwater retention pond we had previously built. This was a client who understood the value of water in a landscape, and we were proud to deliver.
This large farm pondis the centerpiece of a private residential property, designed to be both visually striking and ecologically functional. The project included two dramatic waterfalls, a hand-laid natural stone bridge, aquatic planted bogs, and a fully engineered water circulation system, all working together to create a living landscape that looks as though it has always been there.
Design & Engineering:
Every successful large pond begins long before a single shovel hits the ground. PondWorks handled the full scope of pre-construction services for this project, including:
>Site survey and evaluation to understand existing grades, drainage patterns, and underground utilities
>Pond Construction documents prepared in coordination with the municipal permitting process
>3D conceptual modeling to help the client visualize the finished pond before construction began
>Engineer coordination throughout the land development process, particularly for the integration of the bridge structure into the pond design
One notable site challenge was the presence of the property's main electrical service line running beneath a portion of the pond footprint. Precise, carefully planned excavation was required to safely work around this infrastructure without disruption, a detail that underscores why thorough site investigation matters on every project.
Construction Highlights:
A Pond Built to Circulate
Keeping nearly half an acre of water clean and clear requires serious infrastructure. Two 7.5 HP submersible pumps move water from the lowest point of the site to the head of the upper pond through approximately 900 linear feet of 8-inch PVC pipe. The result is roughly 1,000 gallons per minute flowing continuously over two large waterfalls creating the sights and sounds that make this pond so memorable.
Natural Stone Throughout
The precast concrete bridge spanning the driveway was finished with hand-laid natural stone, chosen to complement both the local geology and the existing materials of the residence. Every boulder and fieldstone used throughout the project was regionally sourced, lending the installation an authenticity that makes it feel like a natural part of the landscape rather than something placed upon it.
Constructed Wetlands as Living Filters
Four constructed wetland bogs serve as the pond's natural filtration system. Water is pushed up or down through layered gravel beds, where beneficial bacteria and native aquatic plants absorb excess nutrients and help maintain water quality organically, reducing the need for chemical intervention and supporting a healthy aquatic ecosystem.
Over 1,000 aquatic plants were installed during initial construction, with supplemental planting completed the following season to further establish the naturalized wetland edges.
Ongoing Pond Management
A pond of this scale is a long-term investment, and PondWorks is proud to continue providing comprehensive Pond Management Services for this property, caring for the farm pond, the stormwater retention basin, and the garden pond at the driveway turnaround. From seasonal maintenance to water quality monitoring, we remain a trusted partner long after construction is complete.
